2.1 Overview of the Programme
First Year
The first of the Four-Year standard programme in devoted to introductory courses in physical geography, human geography, cartographical and quantitative methods as well as a fieldwork to acquaint the students with the Nsukka environment in which the University is located. These are general courses aimed at bridging the gap between school geography and more advanced courses in the subsequent years.
Second Year
Courses taught in Second Year are mainly systematic physical geography courses in geomorphology, climatology, biogeography, environmental science, cartography as well as aspects of human population and spatial organization. The Second Year courses provide thorough background for appreciating the systematic human and applied geography courses in the subsequent years.
Third Year
The Third Year courses are addressed primarily to the systematic human geography courses in geographical philosophies, economic and population geography. There are also courses in quantitative and cartographical methods as well as a regional geography of Africa. This year allows the students the opportunity to choose from a range of optional courses.
Fourth Year
Final Year courses are dedicated to advanced courses on geographical thought, cartographical methods, geographies of the developed/developing worlds and Nigeria. This year gives the students the opportunity to offer specialist courses in both physical and human geography and to complete a research project.
